The Benefits of Outdoor Tilers

Tiles are a Designer's Dream

There is an extensive variety of colour patterns and finishes to create your dream style for your outdoor space.

A patio can add value quickly

Use outdoor tiles to create a specific area in your garden for seating or dining. Creating zones can dramatically improve the aesthetics and functionality of your outside space and establish a focal point.

Outdoor tiling is durable

It lasts longer than wood, plastic and painted surfaces, and its durability allows it to withstand severe knocks, heavy traffic and the fiercest of elements.

Can you use indoor tiles outside?

The answer to this question largely depends on the climate and environment in which you live, as well as the type of material that the tiles are made from. In areas with freezing winters and hot, dry summers, for example, indoor tiles may not be the best option because the freeze-thaw cycle can cause some materials, such as ceramic, to crack. However, in milder climates, ceramic tiles may be suitable for your outdoor space. The expert patio tilers at Aussie Tilers can advise you on the best tile to use.

What Tiles are Best for Outdoor Tiling?

An outdoor area is a great place to relax and enjoy the outdoors, and what better way to do that than with a natural stone tiled patio? There are many different types of natural stone to choose from, each with its own unique characteristics. No matter what type of natural stone you choose, you can be sure that you’ll be enjoying your patio for years to come.

Your chosen patio tiler with advise you on factors such as water retention properties and whether the tiles will become slippery when wet when selecting outdoor tiles.  This is why natural stone or slate tiles are recommended for surface tiling in the garden, particularly if they’re exposed to the outdoor elements.

What is Natural Stone?

Most natural stone tiles can be used outside, with the exception of marble. Polished marble tiles are a softer stone and can be more susceptible to scratching and staining.

There is some disagreement about what natural stone actually is. Even within the stone industry, there are many different opinions about what should and should not be called natural stone. The most common definition of natural stone is a product that has been extracted from the earth through quarrying and then processed into slabs, tiles, or other finished products.
Suitable natural stone materials to use outside include:

Limestone

Limestone is a sedimentary rock mostly consisting of calcium carbonate. It makes a smooth, flat paving stone and is a good choice for patios, paths and driveways. It is suitable for courtyards and covered outdoor areas and absorbs minimal water.
It is commonly coloured white and grey, although traces of iron or manganese can create yellow to red hues, while black limestone is a result of rich organic matter.

Travertine

Travertine is a form of limestone typically deposited around hot mineral springs. It is perfect to create a rustic look with its natural variations of white, cream, tan and rust hues.

Slate

Slate is typically quarried from mountains. Higher-grade slate tiles are non-porous and stain-resistant and are perfect for flooring both indoors and outdoors.

Porcelain

Porcelain, like ceramic, is made from clay fired in a kiln but it’s fired at a much higher temperature, which makes it much denser and more durable than ceramic tiles. These properties mean that porcelain is suitable for outdoor use and will not crack during freezing weather in the same way as ceramic does.

If your patio or outdoor are is exposed to weather, natural stone or slate tiles are recommended by specialist patio tilers.

Where Can You Lay a Patio?

Experienced patio tilers can help you create an amazing outdoor space on different surfaces like:

On Grass

You can install outdoor tiles on grass which gives you the flexibility to reposition them. It may not be very stable though if you receive a lot of rain that can leave the grass boggy underfoot.

On Sand or Gravel

After levelling and compacting the sand or gravel bed, place the tiles on top and tap down with a rubber hammer. Add stability by filling the gaps between the tiles with sand or gravel.

You can lay patio tiles on sand and gravel without cementing it because sand or gravel usually provide good drainage. You can’t lay outdoor tiles on soil as the drainage isn’t suitable which will lead to an uneven and soggy base.

On Concrete

You can lay outdoor tiles on a concrete base with mortar which presents good stability and an even, flat surface for your patio. In fact, this is a more popular surface for experienced patio tilers.

Have your Outdoor Floor Tiles Professionally Laid  by Patio Tilers

It’s not easy to lay a patio. There are many things to consider when you’re planning a patio: the size and shape of it, the materials you’ll use, and how you’ll install it. If you’re not careful, you could end up with a patio that’s not level, which can create wet areas, or a patio that’s too narrow or too wide.
